(ie. some were bordered with a rope design etc.) To the untrained eye, a scarab is a scarab. With a little knowledge, however, one can quickly see how these variations can be used to date scarabs through time.
Usage: Another point discussed in this book is how scarabs were used by people in ancient Egypt - from royalty to the average citizen. I particularly liked this segment: "Some have upon them mottoes, such as: "Good Luck," "A Happy Life," etc., being used for sealing letters, etc., and as presents."
Many other fascinating facts are covered in this volume. While the material may itself be somewhat dated, it is a great read and its age is one of its charms. It brings us back to a time when the early excitement of ancient Egyptian discoveries gripped the world.
